Climate
Expect cool summer days and crisp nights in the alpine valley of Kachina
Village. Average precipitation levels are between 34 and 40 inches,
half due to summer rains and the other half from winter snow. July
and August are the rainy months.
Afternoon thundershowers drench the forest, replenishing the numerous
streams and lakes. Snowfall usually begins in early October and
ends in late April or early May. The summer
average temperature is usually in the mid to upper 60s during
the daytime and often in the 40s at night. Winter daytime temperatures
range
from
normally in the 20s and 30s, up into the 50s
on calm sunny ski days. Night time lows can be from around 5
degrees down to 20 below.
Wildlife
Due to the expanse of pristine forest in and around the Kachina
Village area, a multitude of large game, small animals and birds
occupy the
area. Mule deer, elk, antelope, black bear, mountain lion and bighorn
sheep roam the 1.5 million acres of the Carson National Forest and
the 86,193 acres of the Wheeler Peak Wilderness area. In addition,
marmots, pikas, golden eagles, Canada jays, chickadees, woodpeckers
and numerous species of songbirds call the Carson Forest home.
